Hanasaka Jijii

An old childless couple loves their dog dearly. One day, the dog digs in their garden and uncovers a box of gold pieces. A greedy neighbor, believing the dog can find treasure, borrows it. When the dog digs only bones in his garden, he kills it and tells the couple it dropped dead.

The grieving couple buries their dog under a fig tree. That night, the dog appears in a dream and tells his master to chop down the tree and make a mortar from it. When they do, the rice placed in the mortar turns into gold. The neighbor borrows the mortar, but the rice turns into foul-smelling berries, so he smashes and burns it. In another dream, the dog instructs his master to take the ashes and sprinkle them on certain cherry trees. When he does, the trees bloom, impressing a passing daimyo, who rewards him. The neighbor tries to imitate this, but the ashes blow into the daimyo's eyes, leading to his imprisonment and exile.
