Botchan, a recent graduate, takes on his first teaching assignment in a rural village. He quickly finds himself at odds with mischievous students who spy on him and play nasty pranks, as well as a landlord who constantly tries to sell him worthless antiques. Amidst these troubles, he suspects Hotta, the only friend he has made in the village, of being the source of his misery.
As tensions escalate, a meeting is called to address the students' disrespectful behavior, but the proposed punishment is surprisingly lenient. To Botchan's shock, his suspected adversary defends him, casting doubt on the other faculty members' claims about Hotta. When evidence of the dean's questionable activities surfaces, Botchan and Hotta must join forces to expose the truth behind the scandal.
