They share the fun and worries of welcoming new underclassmen while pursuing their ambitious goals: winning the national team championship at the Omi Jingu and Chihaya becoming the Queen, the best female karuta player in Japan. As they train their minds and bodies, the team faces tough rival schools standing in their way to the championship title. Meanwhile, Chihaya's childhood friend Arata Wataya, the prodigy who introduced her to karuta, rediscovers his lost love for the old card game.

Takumi Fujiwara, a recent high school graduate and skilled street racer, faces a crushing defeat when his AE86 suffers an engine failure against Kyoichi Sudou, the leader of the Emperor team. Doubting his abilities, he is approached by Ryosuke Takahashi, the leader of the Akagi RedSuns, who offers him a spot in a professional racing team.
