Keichi Tanaami's animated film 'Red Shade' is built from eighty paintings, each conceived as an independent scene meant to be set in motion. The work can be rearranged freely, so the sequence of scenes—whether played forward, backward, or in any order—does not alter the essence of the piece.
The film draws from childhood memories of World War II, merging them with the imagery of Western pop culture that arrived in Japan during the post-war reconstruction. Through this non-linear structure, the animation creates shifting impressions, like a breeze sweeping through green meadows, while exploring themes of memory and cultural change.
