Pierrot Films animates the Yona of the Dawn sequel
Studio Pierrot's new brand takes over from the anime that aired in 2014, after the manga ended in December 2025.
The official account for the Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) anime announced on Tuesday that Pierrot Films will be the studio in charge of animating the series' announced sequel. The brand, created by Studio Pierrot in 2024, is already working on productions like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and the fourth season of Mr. Osomatsu.
The first Yona of the Dawn anime was produced by Studio Pierrot in 2014, with 24 episodes. The sequel comes after Mizuho Kusanagi's manga ended its serialization on December 19, 2025, following more than a decade and a half in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine.
The announcement gives no release date or details about the sequel's format. It only confirms the studio, a detail that clears up one of the unknowns the project had carried since its existence was announced.
A manga that ended with 48 volumes
Kusanagi began publishing Yona of the Dawn in 2009. The story follows Princess Yona, who loses her family and her kingdom and must fight to survive with the help of her guard Hak. Viz Media, which publishes the manga in English, describes the start of the first volume like this:
A red-haired princess loses her family and her kingdom… Now she must rise and fight for her throne.
The manga ended on December 19, 2025. Before that, in July of that year, a four-chapter gaiden had concluded. The 48th and final collected volume went on sale this Tuesday, the same day as the studio announcement. Viz Media published volume 46 on July 3.
Besides the 2014 anime, the work inspired three OVAs in 2015 and 2016. Funimation released the TV series on home video. The manga also made the leap to the stage: a play in March 2016, another in November 2018, a third in November 2019, and a musical in July 2024, all in Tokyo.
Pierrot Films, Studio Pierrot's bet
Pierrot Films was born in 2024 as an animation brand within Studio Pierrot. The parent studio is known for franchises like Naruto and Bleach, and the new division has taken on major projects such as the adaptation of Bleach's final arc.
Having the Yona of the Dawn sequel land at Pierrot Films marks a change from the team that made the first series, although the announcement does not clarify whether part of the original staff will be kept. It has not been confirmed either whether the sequel will be a second season, a film, or a different format.
The information was shared by the anime's official X account and also picked up by Comic Natalie. The project still has no date, but the studio is now set.
