Mahoutsukai no Yoru reveals battle visuals for its three protagonists
The ufotable film opens on November 20 and confirms eight collaborations with original illustrations to be revealed over eight weeks.
The official Mahoutsukai no Yoru account released battle visuals of Aoko Aozaki, Alice Kuonji, and Soujuurou Shizuki. The three illustrations arrive a month and a half before the film's premiere, set for November 20, 2026 in Japanese theaters.
The visuals show the protagonists in the middle of action, a notable shift from the school uniform images seen at Machi Asobi vol. 30. Aoko appears with a serious expression and an offensive stance, Alice keeps the distant elegance that defines her character, and Soujuurou holds what appears to be his signature weapon. ufotable's intent is clear: sell the tension of the action scenes before the premiere.
The main cast has been confirmed for months. Haruka Tomatsu voices Aoko, Kana Hanazawa plays Alice, and Yūsuke Kobayashi is Soujuurou. The three names already appeared in the new information special and remain for the film.
One collaboration after another until the end of the year
Along with the visuals, the team announced the "8 great collaborations" that will be unveiled over eight consecutive weeks. Each announcement will come with an original illustration, and the campaign will continue even after the theatrical release. It is still unknown which brands or franchises those collaborations will be with.
The strategy is no surprise: TYPE-MOON and ufotable know how to move their properties. With Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] they did something similar, chaining collaborations with stores, cafés, and consumer brands for months. Here the pace is more aggressive: one announcement per week, no pause.
The duo's previous films, in streaming
The "Let's watch it together: TYPE-MOON × ufotable" campaign also has news. The Kara no Kyoukai films and the Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] trilogy will be available on several Japanese streaming platforms starting October 30. On Prime Video and Disney+ they will arrive later, on November 20, the same day as the Mahoutsukai no Yoru premiere.
ABEMA will also open a temporary channel called "Mahoutsukai no Yoru premiere commemorative channel." Starting October 30 it will air five titles for free: the Kara no Kyoukai films, Fate/Zero, Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works], the Heaven's Feel trilogy, and Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan.
It is a direct way to prepare the Japanese audience for the film. Anyone unfamiliar with the TYPE-MOON universe has a month to catch up with the best the company has produced alongside ufotable.
An origin that goes back to the eighties
Mahoutsukai no Yoru began as a novel that Kinoko Nasu wrote before Tsukihime. TYPE-MOON published it as a PC visual novel game in April 2012, with Nasu on script and Hirokazu Koyama on art. The story is set in the late eighties and follows Aoko, a mage apprentice who shares a house with Alice, a real witch, and Soujuurou, a country boy newly arrived in the city.
The film has Takashi Takeuchi as original character designer, Moe Tsuzuki as character designer, and Hikaru Kondo as general director. Direction is by Susumu Takeuchi, with a script produced by ufotable itself. Music is by Hideyuki Fukasawa, and the main theme, "Yoru to Ao," is performed by supercell.
Toho and Aniplex handle distribution in Japan. Outside the country there is still no confirmed date, but with Aniplex involved the logical outcome is a theatrical release in other territories at some point in 2027.
There is a month left before the Japanese premiere and the promotional machine is already at full capacity. The battle visuals do their job: remind everyone that this is not a school drama, but a story about magic with ufotable behind the animation. What do you expect from the film?
