The Apothecary Diaries Film Reveals Cast for Kajadan Pirates
Kenshō Ono, Ryōta Takeuchi, and Jirō Saitō join the film, which opens in Japan on December 11.
TOHO animation has released a new character trailer for The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady's Treasure (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bōhi no Hihō), the film based on the light novels by Hyuganatsu and Touko Shino. The video focuses on the Kajadan river pirates and confirms who voices their leaders.
Kenshō Ono plays Suija, the group's current chief, who seeks the hidden treasure left behind by his late father Kaja. Ryōta Takeuchi voices Eishō, Suija's loyal subordinate, and Jirō Saitō plays Kaja, the former leader of the Kajadan who died a year ago after hiding a treasure.
The film's website has also revealed an image of Seisei, Suija's older sister and Kaja's daughter. The trailer shows the character, but no voice actress has been announced yet. TOHO animation will release another video tomorrow featuring the characters Ruo Qing and Yi Shan.
The film follows Maomao and Jinshi on their journey to the hometown of a concubine who died five years ago in the imperial harem, to return her remains to her homeland. There they encounter pirates, hidden treasures, and the secret of the Empress's remains.
A New Story Written by the Original Author
The film opens in Japanese theaters on December 11 and features a completely new story written by Hyuganatsu, the author of the original novels. Crunchyroll announced last week that it has acquired the rights for North America and the rest of the world, excluding Asia but including India. The international release date will be announced later together with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The third season of the television anime premiered on October 2 in NTV's "Friday Anime Night" block and its affiliated channels. Its second part will arrive in April 2027.
The first season aired in October 2023 and the second in January 2025, both with two consecutive cours. Crunchyroll has them available for streaming with an English dub.
The Cast Grows Ahead of the Premiere
Mariya Ise had already joined the cast as Mu Qing, a key character and son of the Bi clan. Nobuo Tobita plays Birō, the head of the Bi clan; Kumiko Watanabe plays Shūu, Birō's wife; and Hirofumi Nojima plays Bisen, the clan's eldest son.
The novels began publication on the "Shōsetsuka ni Narō" website in October 2011, and Shufunotomo has been publishing them in print with illustrations by Shino since August 2014. Nekokurage launched the manga adaptation in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine in May 2017.
