Oen is a young girl who is taken in by Saisenji Temple, a place where funerals are held for the dead. Despite her strange fate, she grows up bravely in this somber environment, surrounded by the rituals and customs of death.

Set in the Edo period, the story follows Oen as she learns about the role of a "Sanmai Hijiri," a mortician who prepares bodies for burial. Through her daily life at the temple, she witnesses the grief of families, the solemnity of funeral rites, and the delicate balance between life and death. The manga explores the Japanese view of life and death, blending a refreshing yet solemn tone as Oen comes to understand the importance of honoring the departed and the beauty in letting go.
