The Diary of Ma-chan

The Diary of Ma-chan

マアチャンの日記帳

The Diary of Ma-chan follows the daily adventures of Ma-chan, a cheerful and mischievous preschool boy, and his friend Ton-chan. The two are always arguing and getting into all sorts of shenanigans, offering a humorous look at childhood in post-war Japan.

Set in 1946, the story reflects the era's atmosphere: Ma-chan is more interested in learning the ABCs from the American soldiers stationed nearby than in studying the Japanese phonetic alphabet with his father. This simple contrast highlights the cultural shifts of the time.

The collection also includes other short series by Osamu Tezuka, such as the daily life of a trainee monk in Kyoto, a pair of siblings on gag-adventure expeditions, a family comedy about television, and the chaotic household of a Peruvian widow with curious inventions.
