In the late Edo period, around 1860, Japan is torn between patriots seeking to restore imperial rule and the shogunate forces defending the existing government. Amid this turmoil, a poor samurai named Okada Izo is hired by the patriots to assassinate shogunate members.
Unlike other mercenaries of the era, Izo works for no single master, navigating a world where betrayal is commonplace. As revolutionary currents clash and the old samurai values fade, his story unfolds through the violent and shifting loyalties of the Bakumatsu period.
