In a world inspired by ancient China, twins Sei Shunran and Sei Shunrai are constantly mistaken for the wrong gender. The older sister, Shunran, is intelligent and ambitious, while her younger brother, Shunrai, is strikingly beautiful. Shunran dreams of taking the civil service examination to pursue a career in government, but as a woman, she is barred from doing so. Meanwhile, Shunrai is expected to enter the inner palace, a path he does not desire.
