Hiroshima: Natsu no Nokgori no Bara

Jimmy Murakami, a Japanese-American animation director who experienced internment during World War II, left as his final wish a film about Hiroshima. The story is based on the lifelong research of historian Shigeaki Mori, a survivor of the atomic bombing who dedicated decades to uncovering the fates of American prisoners of war killed in the attack.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, the film follows an American POW and a Japanese nursing student who fall in love. Their relationship is torn apart by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The title evokes the Irish folk song "The Last Rose of Summer," which inspired the Japanese melody "Niwa no Chigusa."
