Xian Ni anime releases a movie and redefines its universe with the Battle of the Immortal Slayer
The film arrived on Tencent Video on October 1 and surpassed 21,000 popularity points in under two hours.
The wait is over. On October 1, 《仙逆剧场版 弑仙之战》 (Xian Ni: The Battle of the Immortal Slayer) premiered on Tencent Video, and in under two hours it had already surpassed 21,000 popularity points on the platform. For those of us who follow the Xian Ni donghua, this movie is the missing piece of the story that needed to be told.
The film dives headfirst into one of the most intense moments of Wang Lin's arc. The protagonist, with his cultivation at the Dao Questioning stage, faces the Bloody Ancestor, an enemy who is two great realms above him. The power gap is so brutal that it seems impossible, but the movie doesn't resolve the conflict with a simple power-up.
The creative team said it clearly: the biggest challenge was making Wang Lin's victory feel earned, not handed to him. And that's why the entire narrative revolves around strategy. Baits, formations, substitutes, layers of deception... The battle simmers slowly until everything explodes in the final confrontation.
Wang Lin in the middle of his battle against the Bloody Ancestor in the Xian Ni movie.A story that works for new and old fans alike
What I like most about this movie is that it leaves no one out. If you've been following the donghua for years, you finally see in detail the key transition of Wang Lin that the series skipped between episodes 151 and 152. But if you've never seen Xian Ni, you can jump straight into the movie and understand it as a self-contained story.
That's a bold decision. Seasonal anime usually tends to plant hooks for the future, but here the pacing is different: a storm-like, concentrated narrative that gets straight to the point. The pursuit of the Bloody Ancestor, the trap in the Thunder Realm, and the final comeback form a complete arc that stands on its own.
Add to that the work with the supporting characters. Li Yuan, who comes from a prestigious family, drops a line that defines his loyalty: his greatest achievement isn't his power, but having helped his friend hunt immortals. And Xu Liguo, who is always joking around, is the first to hold Wang Lin up when everything falls apart. Small details, but they give the story its soul.
Key scenes and characters from the epic battle in the fantasy world of Xian Ni.The visual and sound design also tells the story
The movie doesn't settle for just looking good. Wang Lin's design changes according to his mental state: when he's in his Ancient God form, the red hair and bronzed skin reflect that stage of "I am my own mountain." Later, upon reaching the Yangshi realm, his appearance becomes more sober, with black and white layers that hide his true power.
The scenery draws from traditional Chinese architecture: temples, caves, bronzes, and jades. The ancestral hall of the Yao family, for example, takes references from the Songyue Pagoda and uses the red and black contrast to create a symmetrical oppression that can be felt even through the screen. And the Thunder Realm blends that aesthetic with a post-apocalyptic vibe that makes it unique.
The sound also has its own language. Wang Lin's theme has a rock energy that makes his rebelliousness feel more visceral, while the Bloody Ancestor has a cold, dissonant vocal chorus that commands respect without needing a complex melody. Every hit, every spell, is placed in service of what the characters feel.
"I am my own mountain" as the IP's signature
There's a line from Wang Lin that is becoming the spiritual hallmark of this franchise: "With no mountain to lean on, I become the mountain; with no one to trust, I become the sky." It's not just an epic line. It's the thesis of the entire movie.
The confrontation with the Bloody Ancestor isn't simple revenge. It's a rite of passage: honor the immortals, kill an immortal, and finally surpass what an immortal represents. Wang Lin breaks the rule that a mortal cannot oppose the heavens, and in that process we understand why so many fans affectionately call him "Brother Mazi."
The movie also proves that the Xian Ni universe can expand without losing its essence. The joint work between the annual series and the movie allows longtime fans to fill in gaps and newcomers to find an entry point. And the franchise is already moving beyond the screen: collaborations with KFC, Arcfox, and other brands are bringing the anime's symbols into everyday life.
With advance screenings in Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, where fans showed up with their "itabags" and even decorated cars, it's clear that Xian Ni is no longer just a cult donghua. It's a community that wants to live the story beyond the weekly episode. Now we just need this movie to reach Latin America with official subtitles or dubbing, because there's an appetite for this kind of story here too.
