The new volume arrives amid the manga's fifth anniversary celebrations, with a showdown between Sō and Nirei as its main draw.

The manga WIND BREAKER will have a new volume before the year ends. Volume 28 will go on sale in Japan on December 9, 2026, as confirmed by the series itself through its official channels. The date comes just as the series celebrates its fifth anniversary of serialization.

An official synopsis for the volume has not been released yet. That doesn't stop the preview from making clear what the heart of the story will be: the confrontation between Sō and Nirei. After being missing for several days, Sō reappears before Nirei only to announce that he is leaving. Nirei refuses to accept it and challenges him to a fight to stop him.

What makes the duel interesting is that it isn't framed as just another fight between delinquents. They are friends, but also master and disciple. That bond is what's at stake, and the question the preview leaves behind is how far a fight goes when the goal isn't to win, but to stop someone from walking away.

Meanwhile, Sakura continues searching for clues about Sō's disappearance. The preview mentions that he will meet someone again, though it doesn't say who. What it does anticipate is that the mystery surrounding Sō is starting to take shape and that behind it lies a truth described as cruel.

This isn't the first time WIND BREAKER has put two of its main characters face to face for personal reasons. Satoshi Shinsato's work has built much of its identity on fights that matter more for what the characters leave unsaid than for the blows they land. This arc seems to follow the same line.

What Is WIND BREAKER

The series follows Sakura Haruka, a first-year student who arrives in town to enroll at Fūrin High School. The school has a reputation for being a delinquent school where grades are a disaster, but no one can beat its students in a fight.

What Sakura discovers upon arriving is that Fūrin is no longer what it used to be. It now operates as a group called Bōfurin that protects the town. From that point on, his goal changes: he stops fighting to prove he is the strongest and starts fighting to defend people.

The premise sounds simple, and in part it is. But the manga has managed to sustain it with a broad cast and well-choreographed fights. The anime, produced by CloverWorks, gave it a significant boost and turned the franchise into one of the most visible in the juvenile delinquent genre in recent years.

An Anniversary with a Packed Schedule

Volume 28 isn't the only thing moving around the franchise. The series is in the middle of its five-year campaign, and during October and November there will be a themed café in Tokyo and Osaka with a Halloween aesthetic. Products from the SUMMER WIND VACATION line have also been announced, including acrylic stands, lunch bags, pouches, and towels.

All of this keeps WIND BREAKER at a steady release pace. It's no coincidence: the series has found a loyal audience that responds well to physical products and in-person events. The calendar for the coming months confirms it.

Volume 28 will go on sale on a Wednesday, as is usual for manga releases in Japan. There is still no confirmation of special editions or extra content. What is known is that the story enters a delicate point for one of its most beloved characters.

We'll have to see how Shinsato resolves the duel between Sō and Nirei. If WIND BREAKER has proven anything, it's that it doesn't hesitate to put its protagonists against the ropes. This arc looks like one of those moments.
