Webtoon Makes a Splash at NYCC 2026 with Marvel App and 15 Anime in the Pipeline
The Korean company unveiled its new Marvel Comics app and confirmed that The Remarried Empress and The Boxer are entering anime development.
Webtoon Entertainment stole the show at New York Comic Con 2026 with two announcements that hit close to home: an official Marvel Comics app and a plan to animate around 15 original works from the platform. The Korean company, which owns Naver Webtoon, was at the Javits Center in New York from October 8 to 11, and this year it set up two separate booths: one for WEBTOON and another for the new app.
The WEBTOON booth spanned about 100 pyeong (roughly 330 square meters) and was built entirely around POG LAND, one of the most popular Korean webtoons right now. They installed a 20-foot-tall structure, reading zones, cosplay activities, and exclusive merchandise sales. The series creator, Pogo, held his first-ever signing in the United States, and five other North American creators also took part in autograph sessions. According to the company, around 50,000 people visited the booth over the four days of the event.
The other big reveal was the Marvel Comics app, developed and operated by Webtoon Entertainment. It arrives on November 16 with a catalog of more than 35,000 digital comics featuring titles from Marvel, Star Wars, and 20th Century Studios. It's a major move: until now, Marvel had its own platforms, and Webtoon being put in charge of this app says a lot about the confidence in its reading technology.
Fifteen webtoons eyeing an anime adaptation
But what matters most to those of us who follow anime is the animation plan. Webtoon Entertainment announced a collaboration between its Japanese subsidiary Line Digital Frontier, studio Hayate, and Crunchyroll to assess from the earliest stages the potential of around 15 original works from the platform.
The idea is for the three companies to work together from initial development, rather than one licensing and the others producing separately. That could speed up timelines considerably and ensure projects are well thought out before they hit the screen.
Among the titles joining the development slate are The Remarried Empress and The Boxer. The former is a fantasy romance manhwa that has been one of the most-read series on the platform for years; the latter, a sports drama about boxing that already has a massive fandom. Additionally, the convention featured an animated promotional video for Mercenary Enrollment, another heavyweight in the catalog.
This isn't a premiere confirmation, but it is a clear sign that these titles are being taken seriously. Having Crunchyroll involved from the start also gives us hope that, when the series are announced, they'll come with dubbing and distribution for Latin America.
Webtoon Entertainment CEO Junkoo Kim said that at Comic-Con they felt firsthand the interest from fans and the industry in their stories, and that they will keep working to bring more of them to a wider audience.
The company also took part in five panels with partners, creators, and experts, where they discussed the global expansion of digital comics, the romance genre, and the future of the business.
Which webtoon from that list of 15 would you like to see animated? The Remarried Empress has been on my wish list for years. Tell us yours in the comments.
