Thunder 3 Will Have a Second Season in 2027
Netflix confirms the continuation of the sci-fi anime created by Hiroya Oku, the author of Gantz.
The anime series Thunder 3 will have a second season. Its team announced it this October 1, with a trailer and a special illustration by Yuki Ikeda, the pseudonym Hiroya Oku uses to sign this manga. The premiere is scheduled for 2027, with no specific date yet.
The first season aired in Japan between July 8 and September 30, 2026, with 12 episodes, and reached the whole world through Netflix. The platform will continue to be, barring any surprises, the home of the continuation.
The news comes just as the broadcast of those first episodes ends, so there is no room for doubt: the story of Pyontaro and his friends will continue. And it is good news for those who were left wanting more after the end of the first batch.
What Thunder 3 Is About
For those who don't know it, Thunder 3 is a sci-fi series with a premise very much in the vein of a youth adventure. Pyontaro is a middle school student whose little sister, Futaba, adores him. One day, he and his friends, the so-called "Small Three," decide to watch a strange disc their teacher left them. What they don't know is that this disc is connected to another universe.
While they are distracted, Futaba ends up absorbed into that parallel world. From that point on, Pyontaro and his friends have to find her and discover what exactly that other place they have arrived at is. The premise is a bit reminiscent of those stories about groups of friends who end up in a cosmic mess, with the stamp of its author, known for Gantz.
The original manga was published in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine between May 2022 and June 2026, and was collected into ten volumes. Kodansha USA has licensed it in English, both in digital and print formats.

The first season had a fairly solid team. Hiroyuki Seshita, chief director of Ajin and director of Blame! and KamiErabi GOD.app, served as chief director. Keisuke Ide, of Levius, was the director, and Hiroshi Seko, screenwriter of Witch Hat Atelier and Rooster Fighter, handled series composition and scripts. Animation was produced by studio UNEND.
For now, it has not been confirmed whether this team will return for the second season. What is usual with these early announcements is that production details are revealed later, as the 2027 premiere approaches.
What we do know is that the commemorative illustration was drawn by Yuki Ikeda himself, who announced the news on his X/Twitter account last week. A detail that manga fans appreciate, because the author does not always participate so actively in the anime's promotion.
Now it's time to wait. The second season of Thunder 3 will arrive in 2027, and it will do so with the story of Pyontaro, Futaba, and the Small Three still very much open. It remains to be seen how many episodes it will have and whether Netflix will release it simultaneously with Japan again, as it did with the first.
