The 'Hotaru no Yomeiri' Manga Gets a Live-Action Adaptation

The obsessive love story with a contract marriage makes the leap to live action, according to Japanese press reports.

The manga Hotaru no Yomeiri will get a live-action adaptation. That's according to Japanese press reports, which confirm the leap to live action for this story of toxic, obsessive love that had already made the jump to anime.

The news comes shortly after the animated series began airing on Fuji TV's noitaminA block. The live-action adaptation thus joins a sweet moment for the franchise, which is experiencing a major boost in Japan.

The original work is a manga by Oreco Tachibana, the same author behind Promise Cinderella. If you know that story, you already have an idea of what to expect: strong-willed protagonists, relationships that go off the rails, and constant tension between the romantic and the twisted.

A Contract Marriage with a Hitman

The premise of Hotaru no Yomeiri is the kind that keeps you glued to the pages. The protagonist is a young woman from a wealthy family who, due to a series of circumstances, has little time left to live. In sheer desperation, she decides to hire a hitman to end her life.

But the plan goes completely sideways when the hired killer, far from carrying out the job, proposes marriage to her instead. From there, the story becomes a constant push and pull between two characters who shouldn't be together and yet can't seem to stay apart.

It's a shōjo through and through, but one that breaks the mold. The relationship between the two leads walks the line between danger and tenderness, and that balance is exactly what has hooked so many readers since its release.

The Anime Has Just Begun

The anime adaptation premiered on October 9, 2026, within the noitaminA block, known for championing titles with a distinct visual and narrative approach. The fact that the live-action is being announced right now is no coincidence: the anime has just premiered and the franchise is in full swing.

No details have been given about the cast, the crew, or the live-action's release date. We also don't know whether it will be a film or a series. What is clear is that the story has enough pull to work in either format.

The manga is still being published in Japan and has been steadily gaining popularity, especially among those looking for romance stories with a dark edge. This isn't your typical high school shōjo: the tension here is adult, and the feelings are considerably more twisted.

We'll have to see if this live-action makes its way to Spain. For now, the priority is for the anime to find a home on some streaming platform. With the live-action announcement, we'll likely hear more soon.
