The Boxer Manhwa Gets TV Anime with Crunchyroll
JH's boxing webtoon confirms studio, directors, scriptwriter, and main cast, but still has no release date.
The manhwa The Boxer, by JH, will receive a television anime adaptation. The confirmation came during Crunchyroll's panel at New York Comic Con 2026, where a trailer with English subtitles was shown and the cast and main staff were revealed. The platform will stream the series, although there is no release date yet.
The announcement is part of a broader partnership. Crunchyroll, HAYATE, and LINE Digital Frontier Corporation —a subsidiary of WEBTOON Entertainment— have formed a coproduction alliance to adapt a selection of WEBTOON titles into anime. According to the joint statement, the three companies will cooperate on the development of around fifteen potential adaptations. HAYATE will lead development and production alongside LINE Digital Frontier and Crunchyroll, which will exclusively stream the resulting anime in certain territories.
The Boxer Staff and Cast
Direction is handled by Takehiro Kubota, director of the first season of My Happy Marriage, and KANG Wonyeong. Masahiro Suwa, character designer on The Rising of the Shield Hero since its first season, returns in that role. Toshiya Ono is in charge of series composition and script; his credits include 86 EIGHTY-SIX and Shadows House.
BLUE RIGHTS is credited as creative producer. Animation is handled by breccia and Studio JEMI. The trailer also confirmed the main voice cast, although the announcement does not detail the actors' names or their characters.
The webtoon was published digitally in Korean on Naver Webtoon between December 2019 and June 2022. In English, it was released digitally by Line Webtoon and in print by Ize Press. In South Korea, thirteen volumes had been published as of September 2025.
What The Boxer Is About
Crunchyroll summarizes the story as follows: K, a legendary trainer who has produced numerous world champions, is searching for his final disciple. He finds him in Yu, a boy who takes hit after hit in an alley without showing anger or fighting spirit. K senses in him a talent that goes beyond genius.
Under K's guidance, Yu steps into the ring and begins his ascent to the top of the boxing world with overwhelming, almost monstrous power.
Standing before him are champions who have perfected their technique and fighters who have pushed past the limits of talent through sheer effort. Each one carries a dream and a reason to keep fighting. The series asks what Yu himself seeks at the end of his fists and what it truly means to be strong.
Cover of the first English volume of The Boxer manhwa. The story starts from a recognizable point within the sports genre: the meeting between a veteran coach and a raw prodigy. The difference lies in the tone. Yu pursues neither glory nor revenge, and the synopsis emphasizes the protagonist's emotional emptiness as much as his destructive capacity. The conflict is not only athletic; it is existential.
The adaptation arrives at a time when Western platforms are increasingly looking to Korean webtoons as a source for anime. The agreement with HAYATE and LINE Digital Frontier points to a sustained strategy, not a one-off bet. The Boxer is the first visible title from that plan.
Still to be announced are the release date, the episode count, and the specific names of the Japanese cast. The trailer confirms that the project is underway and that Crunchyroll will distribute it outside Asia. For now, the rest is waiting.
