Photojournalist Akihiko Okamura's life becomes a manga by Hikaru Takahashi
The Hakodate-based author publishes 'Shutter Izen AKIHIKO' after five years of work alongside an old friend of the reporter
Photojournalist Akihiko Okamura, known for his coverage of the Vietnam War, now has his own story in comic form. Manga artist Hikaru Takahashi, a Hakodate resident, has completed Shutter Izen AKIHIKO, a manga that recounts the life of this reporter born in the same city and who passed away in 1985.
The project took five years to come to fruition. Takahashi, 64, did not work alone: he collaborated with an old friend of Okamura, forming a duo to bring this illustrated biography to life. The news was first reported by the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper.
A man who lived without constraints
Okamura made a name for himself in international photojournalism through his work in conflicts such as the Vietnam War. His figure is directly connected to Hakodate, the city where he was born and where the manga's author also hails from.
Takahashi explains that he wanted to capture the reporter's free spirit. In statements collected by the Japanese outlet, the manga artist says that many people today live "oppressed, growing ever smaller," and that Okamura was the exact opposite: someone who rejected those constraints and stayed true to himself. That character is, in his words, the great appeal of the work.
The author also ties the manga to the current moment. With several armed conflicts underway, he believes that exploring Okamura's trajectory can encourage readers to pause and reflect. It is not a conventional biography, but rather a portrait with pace and without solemnity.
Five years of creative process
The road to publication has not been short. Takahashi speaks of a trial-and-error process that stretched over five years. The collaboration with Okamura's old friend was key to shaping the episodes and the tone of the story.
For now, the report does not specify whether the manga will be published first in print, digitally, or through a particular platform. Neither a release date nor international distribution has been confirmed.
What is clear is that Shutter Izen AKIHIKO was born as a personal project, driven by the connection both protagonists share with Hakodate and by the artist's admiration for a photographer who lived against the grain.
