One Piece 1188: Has Imu Killed Luffy in the Manga?

Chapter 1188 of the One Piece manga has left us all with our hearts in our throats. The fight between Luffy and Saint Nerona Imu, the most powerful villain in the entire story, has ended in a way no one expected: with the protagonist impaled by the enemy's sword.

The final scene shows Imu's weapon halfway through Luffy's chest. It's a brutal blow, enhanced by Imu's special powers, and anyone's first reaction is to fear the worst. But hold on, because the chapter does not confirm his death at any point.

Is Luffy Really Dead?

This is where we need to take a deep breath. The manga ends with that panel of the sword in his chest, but there is no official confirmation that Luffy has died. And those of us who have been following Eiichiro Oda's work for years know we've seen this before.

In the Wano arc, Kaido left Luffy on the brink of death and we all thought it was over. The result? The rubber boy came back to life with a new transformation, Gear 5, which he used to defeat the Emperor and liberate the country. A near-death experience as the trigger for a new power is a resource Oda handles very well.

Many readers believe something similar is being set up now. The community won't stop talking about a possible Gear 6, an evolution that would take Luffy to a level capable of standing up to Imu. The villain himself has already told him he doesn't have enough power to beat him, so an upgrade seems like the next logical step.

What Could Luffy Unlock Now?

Nothing is confirmed yet, but theories point to two paths: a Gear 6 or a massive boost to his Haki. Either option would give him the push he needs to get closer to the power ceiling of One Piece, where Imu sits comfortably.

The near-fatal wound would be, according to this reading, the perfect excuse for Oda to give Luffy that upgrade he's been hinting at for a while. It's not the first time the future King of the Pirates gets up after being counted as dead, and it probably won't be the last.
