New Era launches Real caps with manga scenes printed inside
The second collaboration with Takehiko Inoue's work releases on October 15 in Japan with three models based on the protagonists.
New Era is teaming up once again with Real, Takehiko Inoue's manga about wheelchair basketball. The second batch of caps releases on October 15, 2026 in Japan, at select New Era stores, its official online shop, and ZOZOVILLA. There are three models priced at 6,600 yen each.
The base is the 9TWENTY, the low-profile, comfortable-fit silhouette that New Era typically uses for collaborations of this kind. What's interesting here isn't the shape, but the design work: each cap is built around a character.
Three characters, three caps
The models correspond to Togawa Kiyoharu, Nomiya Tomomi, and Takahashi Hisanobu, the three pillars of the story. The selection is no accident: they are the protagonists who have carried the narrative from the start, each dealing with their own version of disability and guilt.
On the front are the numbers "99," "∞," and "17." They aren't decorative: they reproduce the designs the characters wear on manga covers and on the special cover of volume 17. Anyone who has read that volume will recognize the references immediately.
The decision to use volume 17 as a source makes sense. It's one of the high points of the series, with the three characters already entrenched in their respective conflicts. Inoue doesn't draw filler covers: every visual decision carries meaning.
The detail that makes the difference
The inside of each cap features printed scenes from volume 17. That's the nod for the fan: a detail you can't see when you're wearing it, but one that turns the product into something more than an accessory with a logo.
This is the second time New Era has worked with Real. The first collaboration already explored this line of character-based caps, and this installment deepens that idea with a more specific selection of panels and symbols.
Real isn't Inoue's most commercial manga — that spot belongs to Slam Dunk — but its reader base is loyal, and the slow publication pace over the years has turned every new product into a minor event. A cap doesn't replace a new chapter, but at least it keeps the brand alive between long breaks.
There's no international distribution announcement for now. New Era's manga collaborations tend to stay in the Japanese market at first, and some later make their way to specialty shops in other countries. We'll have to see if this one follows the same path.
