Magic Knight Rayearth Returns to Anime 30 Years Later, Starting October 7

The CLAMP classic airs on the IMAnimation W block with two consecutive cours and theme songs by Junmei and Yurina Kawaguchi.

CLAMP is resurrecting one of its most beloved titles. Magic Knight Rayearth premieres its new anime adaptation on October 7, 2026, in TV Asahi's IMAnimation W block, every Wednesday at 11:45 PM. The series will run for two consecutive cours, so it will accompany the fall season and a good part of winter.

The news comes with the broadcast just around the corner. Streaming begins the following day, October 8, with a progressive release starting at 12:15 AM on Thursday. No endless waiting for those outside Japan who rely on the usual simulcasts.

What we have here is a full-fledged return. The original work was published in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine and had its first TV adaptation in 1994. We haven't seen a new animated version since then: more than three decades of pause for a story that marked an entire generation of readers and viewers.

A Story of Summoning, Magic, and Three Middle School Girls

The premise hasn't changed. Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji visit Tokyo Tower on a school field trip. They don't know each other—they attend different schools—but the moment their eyes meet, a mysterious voice calls out to them: they must save another world. They end up dragged to Cephiro, a kingdom where peace is sustained by the prayer power of Princess Emeraude.

The problem is that Emeraude is imprisoned and the entire world is crumbling. The three girls, teenagers with no combat training whatsoever, are pushed to become the legendary Magic Knights. The question posed by the official synopsis itself is whether they will manage to save the princess and the kingdom before everything collapses.

Anyone familiar with the manga or the '90s anime knows this story doesn't settle for simple isekai. CLAMP built it with a twist on the role of the heroines and the price of salvation, something fantasy shōjo of that era rarely touched with such rawness. The new version has more than enough material to sustain two cours without unbearable filler.

Music and Production

The opening theme is performed by Junmei with "Otome no Ken," while Yurina Kawaguchi sings the ending theme "Hoshitou." Two names that fit the melodic tone the franchise has always maintained, without excess.

Airing on the IMAnimation W block confirms that TV Asahi is betting on giving it visibility in a late-night slot. This isn't a minor project or a commemorative OVA: it's a full series, with a weekly schedule and international distribution planned from the day after the Japanese premiere.

I grew up with the '90s version playing on cable TV, and it always felt like an anime that arrived late to my radar. Seeing it now with current production standards sparks a strange curiosity: I want to know if CLAMP withstands the passage of time without the original charm fading. Because the material is still solid, but the modern execution could work for or against it.

Will you give this return a chance, or would you rather stick with the memory of the classic anime? Let us know in the comments.
