Kindle discounts nearly the entire “Man ga de Yomu” series to 48 yen per volume
The collection that adapts literary classics like No Longer Human or The Crab Cannery Ship in a single volume can be had for under 50 yen.
Amazon Japan launched a Kindle deal with almost every volume of “Man ga de Yomu” (Manga de Dokuha) at 48 yen each. The promotion is already live and allows you to buy individual titles or the complete series at a significant discount.
The collection adapts classics of literature and thought into a single manga volume. Available titles include Kanikōsen (The Crab Cannery Ship), Ningen Shikkaku (No Longer Human), and Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji). Each work is condensed into one volume designed to be read quickly while retaining the essentials.
The art is handled by Team Banmikas and other artists. The idea is to bring long novels and essays into a more digestible format, useful for those who want to know the key points without going through the entire original text.
Prices and bundles in the deal
Most volumes are priced at 48 yen, though some go up to 77 yen. If you'd rather grab everything at once, Amazon sells the bundle of volumes 1 through 50 for 2,487 yen and the one covering 1 through 62 for 3,147 yen.
The per-volume price in those bundles works out to even less than 48 yen, making it worthwhile for those who want to complete the collection in one go. That said, the deal may end without prior notice, and the prices reflect the moment this article was published.
Among the works available, No Longer Human stands out—the autobiographical novel by Osamu Dazai published shortly before his death. The adaptation follows Yōzō, a young man who hides his fear of others behind a clownish mask and ends up trapped in a life of rejection and loneliness.
The deal is exclusive to the Japanese Kindle store, so purchasing these volumes requires an Amazon Japan account. There has been no announcement on whether this discount will reach other regional stores.
A collection that gets you through the classics fast
Man ga de Yomu is not a conventional adaptation: each volume condenses the original work into about two hundred pages of panels. It doesn't replace the full text, but it works as a gateway to titles that often stay stuck on your backlog for lack of time.
Beyond Japanese literature, the series has also adapted works of philosophy and politics. The catalog is extensive, and with deals like this one it becomes a cheap way to build a small library of classics in manga form.
The publisher has not said how long the promotion will last, but these Kindle discounts tend to disappear without much fanfare. If any of these titles catch your eye, it's best to decide soon before the price returns to normal.
