Jingqiu Autumn Book Fair Fills with Science and Music Thanks to Mi Wu and Deer First Sen
The event at Yanqi Lake brought together live experiments, the presentation of Guo Beibei's new book, and a bookbinding workshop.
The third edition of the Jingqiu Autumn Book Fair had a packed day this October 3. On the shores of Yanqi Lake, attendees enjoyed the Mi Wu science show, a talk with Deer First Sen vocalist Guo Beibei, and a bookbinding workshop using natural leaves.
The main attraction for the little ones was the Mi Wu show, a science outreach performance based on the manga Mi Wu Science Manga: The Wonderful Chapter of Vientiane. With over 65 million followers and 17 million copies sold, the franchise turns abstract physics and chemistry concepts into visual, hands-on experiments.
Children take part in one of the event's science activities. One of the most celebrated moments came with the dry ice cloud. A girl poured hot water into a bucket with solid carbon dioxide, and a thick fog covered the stage. "It's like the paradise from Journey to the West!" attendees shouted. The host took the chance to explain the principle of sublimation: dry ice is at -78.5 °C and, when heated, goes directly from solid to gas, cooling the air and condensing the water vapor.
The fair didn't stop there. There was a ping pong ball machine gun to demonstrate Bernoulli's principle, an Aladdin's lamp with hydrogen peroxide, the Magdeburg hemispheres, and a wave of liquid nitrogen clouds. Children raised their hands to get on stage and touch science with their own hands.
The Mi Wu science show filled the stage with smoke during the fair.A mother surnamed Wu said her son already knew the theory from the books, but seeing so many children unable to pull apart the Magdeburg hemispheres made it all click. "This kind of visible experiment makes knowledge stick," she said.
Ten Years of Deer First Sen in a Book
The musical turn went to Guo Beibei, vocalist of Deer First Sen. The band, formed by alumni of Beijing Forestry University, presented Shi Wan, a book published in June 2026 that compiles essays, poems, creation notes, and drawings made by Guo himself between 2015 and 2025.
A group of four people talking on a stage with a backdrop featuring a book and a landscape. The talk combined reading and live music. Guo spoke about the band's ups and downs and revealed details behind the creation of classic tracks like "Chun Feng Shi Li." A reader surnamed Li confessed she always believed that song was born with an aura of success, and that hearing it started as a casual recording among friends made her understand the pressure that came afterward.
Another attendee, surnamed Liu, highlighted how rare it is to see Deer First Sen at an event like this. "They combine music and text, and the acoustic versions sound even more intimate," he commented.
A Hands-On Closing
In parallel, the bookbinding workshop with autumn leaves kept the children busy. Each one stamped leaves onto the cover of their own book, an activity that closed the day calmly after so much energy on stage.
Guo Beibei and his band discuss the book Shi Wan on stage. The Jingqiu Autumn Book Fair keeps proving that science outreach and live music can coexist in the same space. And that a good event doesn't need screens: sometimes a dry ice cloud, a guitar, and a book yet to be made are enough.
