Hunter x Hunter: Togashi Confirms Another Hiatus and Will Turn Down Deadlined Commissions

The mangaka will prioritize his own manuscripts due to mounting physical and mental health issues; Shueisha begins a formal hiatus starting September 6.

Juan Castillo 5 October 2026

Yoshihiro Togashi is putting Hunter x Hunter on hold again. The author confirmed on his X account that he will take an extended break and that, from now on, he will not accept work with set deadlines. The news comes just months after serialization resumed, leaving the series in a formal hiatus starting September 6, 2026.

This is not a simple break between chapters. Togashi was direct: he is dealing with mounting physical and mental health problems, and the commissions he currently has will be his last under that work structure. His priority, he says, will be creating his own manuscripts. The question lingering is whether Hunter x Hunter is part of those personal projects or if the series will remain on indefinite hold while he decides how to move forward.

A Different Publishing Model, but the Same Uncertainty

Shueisha had already set the stage. When serialization returned this year, the publisher announced that the author could take as much time as he needed to create new chapters, regardless of the publishing format used before. It was a nod to Togashi's reality: a history of long hiatuses, chronic lower back pain, and a body that simply cannot keep up with the weekly manga pace.

The announcement doesn't change what we already knew, but it makes it official. Togashi has the manuscript for chapter 428 finished, according to his official channels, and the publisher will only release up to chapter 420. After that, silence. No return date, no promise of immediate continuation — just confirmation that the author needs a breather to sustain the project.

"Due to the accumulation of physical and mental health issues, I have decided that the commissions I currently have will be my last; from now on, I will turn down all work with set deadlines to prioritize creating my own manuscripts. When I resume work on the drafts, I will announce it again through this channel."

The statement leaves little room for immediate optimism. It is the declaration of someone who has spent decades fighting against his own body and who is finally drawing a line: no more external commissions, no more commitments to others. Whatever comes next, if it comes at all, will be at his own pace.

The Succession War, Frozen at Its Densest Point

The interruption arrives at the worst possible narrative moment. Hunter x Hunter remains in the Succession War arc, with Kurapika infiltrating the Black Whale and the 14 princes fighting to the death for the throne. Every chapter adds layers of complexity: fragile alliances, intersecting nen abilities, and a narrative architecture that demands meticulous work.

Those who have read the manga for years know the feeling: advancing dozens of chapters, getting hooked on a plot that branches in every direction, and suddenly facing a hiatus with no clear end. It happened with the Chimera Ant arc, it happened with the Dark Continent expedition, and it is happening again now — with the difference that this pause comes just as the story was building toward its most ambitious moment.

Togashi is not an author who simplifies. The Succession War is a puzzle of interests, powers, and betrayals; writing something like this without room for error requires a level of focus that cannot be sustained with deadlines. The announcement, in that sense, is consistent with his way of working. It is also a reminder that Hunter x Hunter will never be a regular series again.

Health Above All

Let's be clear: this is not an editorial negotiation or an author's whim. Togashi has spoken for years about his physical problems — pain that prevents him from sitting, sleepless nights, and the frustration of not being able to draw as he would like. His decision to turn down deadlined commissions is not a move designed to build anticipation; it is a measure of creative survival.

The reader community has learned to read between the lines. Every Hunter x Hunter hiatus is interpreted as bad news, and this time is no different. But there is something different in the tone of the announcement: Togashi does not apologize, does not promise to return soon, does not sugarcoat the situation. He simply announces it. And he does so with the honesty of someone who no longer has the energy to pretend everything is fine.

Shueisha, for its part, maintains its message of flexibility. The publishing model without fixed deadlines is the only viable path for Hunter x Hunter to continue existing. It's time to accept that.

The formal hiatus has already begun. Now we wait for Togashi to announce the resumption of drafts, if he ever does. Do you think he will return to Hunter x Hunter or prioritize other personal projects? Let us know in the comments.
