Crunchyroll Manga arrives in India with over 250 English-language titles

The digital service lands in the country with works from J-Novel Club, Square Enix, and Yen Press, and is preparing more additions from Viz Media.

Crunchyroll Manga is now available in India. The platform announced its arrival in the country with an initial catalog of over 250 English-language titles, an expansion confirmed by Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini during the anime future forum held in New York.

The service is included in the Ultimate Fan membership, which costs 299 rupees per month or 999 rupees per year. There is no standalone manga plan: anyone who wants to read will have to go through the highest subscription tier.

The launch includes works from J-Novel Club, Square Enix, and Yen Press. Indian readers will be able to start with The Apothecary Diaries, My Dress-Up Darling, Bocchi the Rock!, and Bungo Stray Dogs, among others. Crunchyroll teases that action titles from Viz Media will be added soon.

This is not a casual move. The company's data backs the bet: 81% of anime fans in India read digital manga at least once a month, and 56% do so weekly. These figures are well above the average of the eleven markets surveyed, where 69% of anime viewers consume digital manga on a monthly basis or more.

Additionally, Crunchyroll users are 1.4 times more likely to read manga weekly than those who do not use the platform. The audience was already there; the product was missing.

A year of slow but steady expansion

Crunchyroll Manga debuted in the United States and Canada in October 2025. Since then, its library has grown to over 450 titles, with partners including AlphaPolis, Kodansha, Shueisha, Titan Manga, and Viz Media, among others.

The arrival in India marks another step in a strategy aimed at turning Crunchyroll into a complete ecosystem for anime fans. It is not just about watching series: the idea is for the same user to read the manga, follow the adaptation, and never leave the ecosystem.

Asa Suehira, Crunchyroll's chief content officer, puts it bluntly: "For years, fans have asked us to bring manga into their Crunchyroll experience, and we are excited to make that happen for more fans around the world."

The line is straight out of the corporate playbook, but it reflects something real: digital manga has been a long-standing gap for the platform. While Viz and Shueisha built their own apps, Crunchyroll focused on video. The acquisition by Sony and the integration with Funimation made the goal clear: dominate the entire anime entertainment circuit.

What it means for the Indian market

India is not a minor market. Anime has exploded there in recent years, driven by television broadcasts and a young audience that consumes English-language content naturally. Crunchyroll betting on manga in that territory makes sense: digital reading data is above the global average.

The price, however, could be a hurdle. 299 rupees per month is roughly $3.50, but in a market accustomed to low prices and free alternatives, the entry barrier exists. Crunchyroll has not announced a manga-only plan for India, at least for now.

The initial selection is solid. The Apothecary Diaries comes from an anime adaptation that has been a sustained hit, and Bocchi the Rock! has an intense fan base. These are titles anime viewers already know, which makes the leap to manga easier. The question is whether the catalog expands quickly enough to justify the subscription.

Crunchyroll Manga's library already exceeds 450 titles globally, and the company promises more additions for India in the coming months. The Viz Media titles, in particular, could be the hook many are waiting for: that is where the action shōnen that dominate popularity charts live.

The move leaves an open question: how long will it take Crunchyroll to bring manga to Latin America in Spanish? The platform has prioritized English-speaking markets so far, but the Latin American user base is enormous. If digital reading data in India justifies the launch, the numbers from Mexico or Argentina probably do too.
