The comic Cong qian you zuo shan took home the Golden Dragon Award for Chinese Animation in the best comic of the year category. The announcement was made on October 2 during the 23rd edition of these awards, and the prize was collected by Chen Jiang, vice president of the Macao Youth Federation, on behalf of the team.

The work is a creation of the Shangshang Lianchuang label, a Chinese-style children's book brand in which a Macao team is fully involved. This is no minor award: the jury highlighted that the comic uses Eastern philosophy as a foundation to address universal themes such as courage, faith, responsibility, and the decisions that shape one's path.

A commercial and critical success

The numbers back up the award. The first volume of the comic surpassed 800,000 copies distributed and reached the top of the general sales chart on Dangdang, one of China's largest online bookstores. The second volume sold more than 40,000 copies in its first 24 hours.

It's not just a commercial phenomenon. The award jury emphasized that the work manages to combine a Chinese philosophical foundation with a narrative that is accessible to younger readers. That balance between market and quality is exactly what the Golden Dragon aims to recognize.

Macao as a cultural bridge

Chen Jiang, co-founder and chief operating officer of Shangshang Lianchuang, explained after receiving the award that this recognition is a boost for a team that has been working for years on illustrated books about Chinese culture. He also said they translate their works into several languages to take them abroad.

The goal, he said, is for more young people from Macao to join the cultural industry and take advantage of the city's role as a window for exchange with the world. The idea is clear: to tell Chinese stories in an engaging way so they can reach other countries.

The Golden Dragon Award is one of the most established competitions in the animation and comic industry in China. Winning it with a traditional Chinese-style work and a Macao team is an important step for the visibility of the region's cultural production across the rest of the country.
