Code Geass: Star Chaser Aspal Shows First Teaser and Confirms 2027 Premiere

The sequel to the iconic political mecha thriller changes director and writer, but keeps Sunrise and Bandai Namco at the helm of production.

Twenty years after the premiere of Code Geass, the franchise is showing signs of life again. The new installment, Code Geass: Star Chaser Aspal, has just shared its first official teaser and confirmed that its release is slated for sometime in 2027.

The announcement comes after the project was confirmed in 2025, when it was revealed that the saga would get a sequel to commemorate its 20th anniversary. Now, we can finally get a glimpse of what this return has in store.

A change of command for a new era

The original series, which premiered in 2006, introduced us to the crusade of Lelouch Lamperouge, an exiled Britannian noble living in a colonized Japan who joins the Japanese insurgency to overthrow the tyrannical regime. His main weapon is the Geass, a mysterious gift that allows him to control the will of others.

That Sunrise-produced story became a benchmark for political thrillers, famous for its moral dilemmas, dramatic twists, and mecha battles. Two decades later, that essence seeks to expand with a new chapter.

The most notable change is behind the scenes. Kazuka Nomura and Mado Nozaki take over as director and writer, replacing the historic duo of Goro Taniguchi and Ichiro Okouchi. Sunrise and Bandai Namco remain in charge of the franchise, but the creative reins pass to a different team.

Where does it fit in the timeline?

The exact point where Star Chaser Aspal will fit within the canon has not yet been detailed. Everything points to it following the timeline of the most recent films and the events of Rozé of the Recapture, the miniseries that premiered in 2024.

For those who want to catch up, the original Code Geass series is available on Crunchyroll. It's the perfect starting point to remember why Lelouch remains one of the most complex protagonists in anime.

The first teaser already leaves us wanting more. The exact premiere date has not been revealed yet, but the return of Code Geass is a reality. Do you have faith in this new creative team? I'll read you in the comments.
