Code Geass Opens Plaid Suit Pop-Up Shop in Yokohama
The shop will be open from October 2 to 30 at Yurindo Yokohama Station West Exit Manga Kingdom, with new merchandise of Lelouch, Suzaku, C.C., and Kallen.
A new pop-up shop for Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion opened its doors on October 2 at the Yurindo Yokohama Station West Exit Manga Kingdom bookstore. The central theme is plaid suits, and protagonists Lelouch, Suzaku, C.C., and Kallen debut illustrations created especially for the occasion.
The shop will remain open until October 30. Hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., except on the final day, when it closes at 5:00 p.m. Admission is free and no reservation system is mentioned.
The product lineup of the Code Geass pop-up shop with a plaid suit theme. The catalog features ten different products. There are acrylic items—stands, keychains, and coasters—as well as tradable merchandise like tin pins, cards, and random postcards. Rounding out the lineup are a sticker sheet with the relationship map between the four characters and a framed A4 art print.
It's striking that Code Geass continues to generate this type of event nearly two decades after its premiere. The franchise hasn't remained stuck in the memory of 2006: Sunrise and Project L-Geass have managed to keep it alive with sequels, films, and collaborations. That a bookstore chain would bet on a pop-up with plaid suits says a lot about the pull that Lelouch and company still have among the female audience, which is clearly who this design is aimed at.
The transparent bookmark gift for purchases over 2,000 yen, available in eight designs.Purchase Bonus
Those who spend 2,000 yen or more in a single purchase will receive a random transparent bookmark. There are eight designs in total and they will be distributed while supplies last. It's the classic incentive of Japanese temporary shops: a cheap extra to produce, but one that pushes customers to round out their ticket.
The official merchandise account, @Cyber_goods, will confirm the next locations. According to the event information, the plan is to bring the shop to other bookstores across the country, starting with Kanagawa Prefecture. There are no concrete dates for those future stops.
A Franchise That Doesn't Stop
For those unfamiliar with the work, Code Geass is an original 2006 anime directed by Gorō Taniguchi and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi, with character designs by CLAMP. Lelouch vi Britannia, an exiled prince, obtains the power of Geass and uses it to lead a rebellion against the Holy Britannian Empire. The series became a phenomenon for its blend of mecha, political strategy, and Shakespearean drama.
The ending of the second season, in 2008, remains one of the most debated in anime. Then came compilation films, the Akito the Exiled series, and Lelouch's return in Lelouch of the Re;surrection. The franchise has known how to capitalize on every anniversary with events like this one.
The choice of the plaid suit is no accident. In anime's visual language, the Ashford Academy school uniform already used a similar pattern, and formal suits have been a recurring resource in the series' promotional art. This shop recovers that aesthetic and brings it to merchandising.
The pop-up will only be available until late October in Yokohama. Anyone who wants one of those acrylics or wants to try their luck with the bookmarks will have to visit the physical store, as no online sales have been announced for now.
