Black Torch Ends in 12 Episodes and Its Author Wants an Original Second Season

The Black Torch anime wrapped up its first season with 12 episodes and fully adapted Takaki Tsuyoshi's original manga. The series, which was cancelled in Shōnen Jump after just 19 chapters, returned in animated form in the summer of 2026, eight years after its abrupt ending.

The peculiar thing about this adaptation is that there's no more material left to animate. Everything that exists from the manga is already on screen. That leaves the franchise in a strange spot: if a second season is ever approved, there won't be any panels to draw from. A story would have to be invented from scratch.

And that's exactly what its author would love to do.

The Creator Won't Draw More, But He Does Want to Write the Anime

After the season finale, Takaki Tsuyoshi spoke on social media about the future of the series. He made it clear that he has no plans to draw a manga continuation. However, if the anime gets another chance, he would love for that second season to feature an original storyline.

He didn't stop at just wishing. The author stated that, if the project moves forward, he would be fully involved in the production: from the script to the world-building, working side by side with the animation team.

It's important not to get things mixed up. This is a statement of intent, not an announcement. There's no confirmed second season, nor even a production committee formed for it. It's the personal opinion of an author who sees his work resurrected after nearly a decade in limbo.

A Miracle in Anime Form

For Takaki, the fact that Black Torch got animated after so many years on hold is close to a miracle. That's no exaggeration: the series was cancelled back then, which in Shōnen Jump is usually a definitive sentence. For a series with 19 chapters to receive a complete adaptation is rare. Very rare.

The anime is available on Crunchyroll. Whatever comes next, if anything does, hasn't been announced yet.

I have to wonder: does an original second season even make sense? The manga ended where it ended, and stretching out a story that was born incomplete could go well or turn into endless filler. With the author involved, at least there's a solid foundation. Without him, this wouldn't have any appeal at all.
