Akiko Higashimura releases her new essay on women's crossroads
The author of 'Tokyo Tarareba Girls' publishes 'Onna Oiwake' on November 26 with real stories collected over the years.
Akiko Higashimura has a new book. The mangaka behind Tokyo Tarareba Girls and Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist's Journey will publish an essay titled Onna Oiwake: Akiko Higashimura's Human Observation Diary on November 26. It is published by Shinchosha and already has a price: 1,760 yen, tax included.
It is not a standard manga, although it includes short comics written for the occasion. It is an observational essay, a compilation of those stories that Higashimura has been accumulating for years as material for her works. And if there is one thing this woman knows how to do, it is turning real life into panels that sting with pure relatability.
The book's premise is simple and sharp. A woman's life is full of forks in the road. Getting married or staying single. Going back to an ex or betting on someone new. Treating or being treated. And once you are married, you have to choose between work and children.
Higashimura does not speak from theory. She has spent more than two decades drawing women trapped between what they want and what is expected of them. In Tokyo Tarareba Girls she portrayed three women in their thirties who fantasize about what would have happened if they had made different choices. In Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist's Journey she laid herself bare, recounting her training as an artist and her relationship with a teacher as brilliant as he was insufferable. That manga sold over 1.7 million copies, won the Manga Taisho and the Grand Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival, and in 2025 it was adapted into a live-action film starring Mei Nagano.
This essay draws from that same well. The publisher describes it as a "detoxifying essay," the kind that makes you laugh out loud and then leaves you thinking about your own life. Higashimura writes in the prologue: "Work or love? A serious, stable man or a handsome, fun but financially unstable one? And if you get married, work or raising children? Crossroads appear one after another in a woman's life."
A career built on observation
What is interesting here is that the material does not come from a publishing commission. It comes from her working method. Higashimura is a shōjo and josei mangaka who has always gone her own way: she observes, listens, accumulates anecdotes from others and herself, and then turns them into fiction. This book is the reverse of that process. It shows the raw material without passing through the filter of a script.
It is not the first time she has done this. Her manga Mama wa Tenparist, published by Shueisha, was born from her own experience as a first-time mother and sold over a million copies. Higashimura understands that the most effective comedy is built on real discomfort. And in Onna Oiwake she promises exactly that: discomfort served with humor.

For now, there is no news of an English license. Higashimura has published work in English, so it would not be surprising if a publisher showed interest, but for now we just have to wait.
What is clear is that this book arrives at a good time for the author. The 2025 release of the Blank Canvas film put her back in the spotlight, and her name remains synonymous with female stories told without condescension. I am looking forward to it. Her manga have drawn more uncomfortable laughs out of me than I would like to admit, and an essay where she lets loose everything she normally saves for fiction sounds like required reading.
Will you give it a chance if it gets licensed in English? Let me know in the comments.
