I am Gegege - The mysterious story of Mizuki Shigeru

Shigeru Mizuki, one of Japan's most celebrated manga artists, recounts his own extraordinary life in this autobiographical work. Born in the coastal town of Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture, his childhood is marked by a fascination with the supernatural and the local folklore that would later define his career.

At the age of twenty, Mizuki is conscripted into the Imperial Japanese Army and sent to Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. The horrors of war culminate in a devastating explosion that costs him his left arm. Returning to a devastated homeland, he struggles to rebuild his life, accepting an arranged marriage and striving to make a living by drawing and selling comic books.
