After learning that her mother is dying, Kobato Uehara has nowhere to go. Her mother reveals that Kobato has an older brother working in television in Japan. Determined to find him, Kobato travels to Japan with the goal of getting a job and locating her sibling.
On her first day in Japan, Kobato accidentally bumps into Shinjou Takeru, a popular idol. Impressed by her appearance and attitude, Takeru drags her to an audition for a new idol group. Despite her rough manners, deep voice, and lack of polish, Kobato's natural talent and confidence help her pass the audition alongside Takeru. However, there is a major misunderstanding: the agency and everyone else believe Kobato is a boy because of how she acts and dresses.
