In the Ashihara Zuiho province, a young man raised in the mountains is dispatched to the imperial capital as a military officer. Abandoning his birth name, he is given the name "Hiren" and begins working for those who seek his help. He eventually serves under a commoner girl named Yukishiro, a member of the Chief Court Physician Bureau.
Yukishiro is notorious for mercilessly stopping the schemes of aristocrats who use poison to achieve their goals. Known as the Witch of the Chief Court Physician Bureau, she targets nobles she deems an eyesore. When Hiren and Yukishiro discover signs of poisoning from information brought by trusted friends, they launch an investigation to uncover the truth.
