After the end of World War II, the once-wealthy Kazuko family falls into decline. Kazuko, a young woman from an aristocratic background, struggles to adapt to the changing society while living with her ailing mother in a small house in the countryside. Her brother Naoji, a troubled war veteran, returns from the war and adds to the family's instability.
Kazuko becomes infatuated with a dissipated writer, Uehara, a man who represents the new, chaotic post-war world. As she tries to break free from her old life and find meaning, she must confront her family's ruin, her brother's despair, and her own desires.
