A man and his wife live a quiet life, surrounded by their many pets, including a large black cat named Pluto. The man is a gentle soul, but his temperament begins to change as he descends into alcoholism. One night, in a fit of rage, he attacks Pluto, gouging out one of the cat's eyes. Though he is filled with remorse, his violence only escalates.
The next day, he hangs Pluto from a tree, but that very night, his house burns down. The only wall left standing bears the image of a cat with a rope around its neck. Later, he finds a new black cat that resembles Pluto, save for a white patch on its chest. The cat follows him home, but the man grows to hate it, and his wife dotes on it. As his paranoia and rage grow, he takes an axe to the cat, but his wife intervenes, and he kills her instead. He walls up her body in the cellar, and when the police come, he is confident in his crime. But a howling sound leads them to the wall, where they find the corpse and the black cat, alive and perched on her head.
