In the Edo period, the high-ranking daimyo of the Mito domain struggles to keep his bodyguards alive during their travels across Japan. To replenish his ranks, he institutes a recruitment exam targeting the poorest samurai of the land, the ronin.
Ronin Inouse Shinnosuke, desperate to escape poverty, attempts to prove himself to the ranking officials and secure a position as a bodyguard. But the exam is ruthless, and the competition fierce, forcing him to confront the harsh realities of his world.
