Yuuma Kohinata is a high school student attending Mizuhosaka Academy's regular section, alongside his close friends Jun Watarase and Hachisuke Takamizo. The school also has a magic section, founded to train mages in the art of using magic.
With Valentine's Day approaching, Haruhi Kamisaka, a mage in training, goes out with her friend Anri Hiiragi to buy chocolate for a boy she met when she was a child. While in the park, she encounters Yuuma, who stops some younger boys from bullying a young girl. Haruhi begins to wonder if he might be the boy she has been searching for.
On Valentine's Day, Anri challenges Haruhi to a magic battle to take her chocolate by force. When Anri loses control of her magic, it nearly falls onto Yuuma and his friends. Haruhi gives him the chocolate she bought, and Anri does the same, setting the stage for a romantic rivalry.
