Hakai

Ushimatsu Segawa, a young schoolteacher in early 20th-century Japan, carries a heavy secret: he is a burakumin, a member of a historically ostracized social group. His father has sworn him to conceal this identity at all costs, fearing the discrimination that would follow if it were discovered.

Living a life of constant anxiety, Ushimatsu struggles with his hidden heritage while teaching in a rural village. His internal conflict intensifies when he meets a fellow burakumin who has openly defied societal prejudice. Forced to confront his own fears and the hypocrisy of the world around him, Ushimatsu must decide whether to continue hiding or to break his father's vow and reveal his true self.
