The Waiting

기다림

Gwija is a young woman in Korea during the final days of World War II. To protect her from the Japanese forces seizing unmarried girls, her family hastily marries her off to a stranger. After the war ends and Korea gains independence, the couple starts a family, but peace is short-lived. As the Korean War erupts, Gwija flees south with her husband and two young children.

On the chaotic road to safety, while caring for her infant daughter, Gwija becomes separated from her husband and son. Decades pass, and Gwija is now an elderly woman. Her daughter Jina, a novelist, grapples with the weight of a promise she made to help find her long-lost brother. The story unfolds through Jina's writing, exploring the enduring pain of separation and the quiet resilience of a mother's seventy-year wait.
