Boat Life

舟に棲む

Boat Life follows novelist Kenta Tsuda, a stand-in for the artist Tadao Tsuge, as he seeks a life of reprieve and reverie on a small, makeshift houseboat on a river outside Tokyo. Loosely based on Tsuge's own daily life, the story trails the hapless protagonist through a series of magical, absurdist quests, accompanied by a colorful cast that includes a drunkard fisherman, a pervy monk, a talking corpse, a senile hermit, and a half-supportive, half-doubtful wife and adult son.

Set primarily on the Tonegawa River in Chiba, a favorite fishing spot of Tsuge's, the scenes also unfold at the artist's home and at Joker, a jeans and apparel shop the Tsuges opened in 1977. The manga weaves a relaxed and optimistic take on middle-aged reclusion, exploring themes of escape from the grind of work and family, all while capturing the charm of everyday life on the water.
