During the Cultural Revolution in China, sixteen-year-old Ma Xiaojun yearns to rebel against the system. He gets into trouble with his friends, but also nurtures a solitary side, a mysterious obsession with keys, and a desire to achieve greatness.

As maturity sparks a newfound interest in the opposite sex, Xiaojun becomes intrigued by the untouchable Mi Lan. He struggles to find a way to connect with her, navigating the complexities of adolescence and rebellion in a repressive era.
