In an alternate Edo period where the Meiji Restoration never happened, the shogunate still holds power and the class system remains intact. The story is set in an ultra-prestigious middle school in Edo, a city that was never renamed Tokyo, over 150 years ago. Here, students still enjoy traditional entertainment like Kabuki and hang out at pancake houses.

At the center of the story are two students from very different backgrounds: Sobi, the sister of an Edo magistrate, and Michisato, an eccentric son of the ruling Tokugawa clan's Mito family who prefers to be called Michelle. As they navigate the halls of their elite school, their encounters and the clash of their worlds set the stage for a comedic tale of class, tradition, and teenage life in a Japan that never changed.
