Ao no Jidai

Ao no Jidai

青の時代

A collection of thirteen short stories by Mizumaru Anzai, originally published in Garo magazine between 1974 and 1978. The tales range from everyday life to the surreal, capturing quiet moments and strange encounters in rural and urban Japan.

A girl wanders through a winter festival, a bicycle shop owner observes his customers, and a family lives in a house by the sea. Other stories follow a train journey, a horse race, and the mysterious grave of the phantom thief. Each piece is a snapshot of ordinary people facing small wonders and subtle changes.

Through delicate linework and a gentle, melancholic tone, Anzai explores themes of memory, loneliness, and the passage of time. The collection offers a poetic glimpse into the beauty of the mundane.
