Jack is a robot with an unusually human-like psyche, capable of eating and once believing he was human. He works as a bounty hunter on a strange planet, haunted by a traumatic past: he and his human partner were imprisoned and shared scarce food until she starved to death, while Jack survived, learning he was not human.
On his current mission, Jack encounters Ruby, a mysterious being who appears as an innocent child by day and a seductive woman by night. She is a Photuris, a human tribe that must prey on other humans to survive. As Jack gets drawn into her world, his own identity and the line between human and machine are put to the test.
